Small windows, big effects?
A few days ago, I had to write the section of a conference on the imagination which is to be held in November. This was an analysis of the hypothesis of the evil genius in the first and the second of Descartes’s Metaphysical Meditations. As the text of this conference was already largely advanced, I was using Scrivener to bring to my text his last adjustments. However, as I wanted to write a draft of the section dedicated to Descartes, I resolved to use Tinderbox. Then I opened a small window with no metadata and began to type my text with the keyboard. To my surprise, I found that the writing of this short section was done fast enough. My hypothesis is that the fact of opening in this way a small window on a portion of text produces focusing effects that support the writing work. With no empirical material that could perhaps enable me to support this reasoning, I will content myself with this simple hypothesis. If I had more time, I would still love to make my inquiry of regular users of Tinderbox: If you are used to open windows to take notes, what does this arrangement provide in terms of comfort for writing?

J’avais à écrire il y a peu la section d’une conférence sur l’imagination qui doit avoir lieu en novembre prochain. Il s’agissait d’une analyse de l’hypothèse du mauvais génie dans la première et la seconde des Méditations métaphysiques de Descartes. Le texte de cette conférence étant déjà très largement avancé, j’utilisais alors Scrivener pour apporter à mon texte ses dernières corrections. Toutefois, comme je souhaitais d’abord rédiger un brouillon de la section consacrée à Descartes, je pris le parti de me servir de Tinderbox. J’ouvris alors une petite fenêtre dépourvue de toute métadonnée et commençai à taper mon texte au clavier. Ma surprise fut de constater que la rédaction de cette courte section se faisait assez vite. Mon hypothèse est que le fait d’ouvrir de cette manière une petite fenêtre sur une portion de texte produit des effets de focalisation qui soutiennent le travail d’écriture. Ne disposant d’aucun matériel empirique qui me permettrait peut-être d’étayer ce raisonnement, je devrai me contenter de cette simple hypothèse. Si je disposais de plus de temps, je serais néanmoins ravi de mener mon enquête auprès d’utilisateurs habituels de Tinderbox : si vous avez l’habitude d’ouvrir des fenêtres pour prendre des notes, quel confort pour l’écriture cette disposition apporte-t-elle ?
